Casual Mexican food with great hours! You can get food from 9:30- midnight, which I appreciate. You order at the counter and seat yourself. I liked the great selection of items, but it was hard not to get some classic tacos. I really liked the tacos, they do it perfectly simple: meat, cilantro, onion. I liked the tamale as well, but it was lacking on the meat. It was mostly the masa dough, but I actually really liked the dough. It was spicy which is a nice change up. They also have a great selection of ice cream.

I found Los Portales while looking for something close by after a full day at the zoo. The restaurant is small and unassuming. There is a fridge with various drinks including Jarritos and Mexican Coca-Cola. You order at the counter. I ordered a Jarritos, Chicano's, and quac and chips. The food was all great. The portions are huge! You definitely get your money's worth. The quac was great and fresh. This place is 100% authentic. I was glad I made the decision to dine at Los Portales after a long day of walking at the zoo. Definitely recommend if you are in the area!

My boyfriend and I (both from LA) discovered this gem after having a bad experience with another Mexican restaurant in Iowa, we needed a redemption. And I quote my boyfriend, "Leaving this restaurant, I feel like I should be giving them an award or something; magical!" My boyfriend and I got the carne asada burrito and fries. I can honestly say that this is one of the BEST burritos I've had in my life!!! Raised in Mexico and Southern California, I'm amazed on how I enjoyed my food! The carne asada fries (pico de gallo on the side) are like the Cajun style (so yummy) and they are very generous with the avocado slices on top of the fries. The carne asada in both the burrito and fries was tasty and tender. We are definitely coming back to get the burrito and try other foods in their menu. The service was great! The ambience is a legit mom and pop Mexican restaurant. Loved it!

Cute place with counter ordering. People were friendly and food was brought to our table quickly. Food was authentic, tasty and well priced. Parking lot is usually full when I drive past and now I know why.

Don't let the dark front of this place fool you. Come on in, it is well worth it! This is super casual Mexican food at its best. Paper plates and plasticware and some of the best food I have ever had. I ordered the Dorados Taco platter. I was feeling conservative so I went with the ground beef. I piled on the red sauce and the flavor bomb was incredible! They seasoned the meat like none other I have tasted. I had the flour shells which were slightly fried and not greasy at all. The rice was great and the beans were silky smooth. I loved this joint and will be back to try all of the other meat choices.
